Forest City, Iowa
Welcome to Forest City, Iowa!
Forest City has been branded “Where Nature’s Close and Friends are Closer” for good reason. We are a friendly, diverse community with low crime rates and a great place to raise a family, and we have a beautiful view of nature throughout our 7 parks, including Pilot Knob State Park, and the Winnebago River.
Forest City offers a municipal airport, which is largely used by our business and industry community, such as Winnebago Industries, Holland Contracting, CDI, Waldorf University, Mercy Air Med, and Tree Town Festival. The main runway is 5806’ long, the cross-wind runway is 2900’ long, and our airport offers fuel and aircraft maintenance, in addition to aircraft rental and sales.
Forest City is home to a great YMCA, Parks & Rec, aquatic center, and a new Emergency Center that houses our Ambulance Service & Fire Department. We will soon be home to a new Winnebago County Law Enforcement Center in 2016.
Come enjoy our great amenities, like our 18-hole golf course, disc golf course, movie theatre, tennis courts, skate park, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, playgrounds, sand volleyball, etc. We offer 29 miles of nearby hiking and biking trails, along with 3 local campgrounds. Pammel Park offers camping with electric hookups, and is located right along the Winnebago River, where you can also enjoy 26 miles of canoeing and kayaking, The City has partnered with the Forest City Schools and Waldorf College to build a great artificial turf football field and an 8-lane track w/ area for field events.
Forest City has the historical Heritage Park, which offers Kite Day, Steam School, Tractor Pulls, International Festival, Bash on the Farm, Heritage Festival, Tractor Ridge, Steam Threshing Festivals, and several auctions. Heritage Park also provides the backdrop for the amazing Tree Town Festival each year. In addition, we have a Mansion Museum that offers historic tours, in addition to the Winnebago Visitor’s Center, where you can take a tour of Winnebago Industries.
We are a very welcoming community and have some of the best volunteers around. Without these volunteers, we wouldn’t have been able to host Operation LZ to welcome home Vietnam Veterans, an event that was attended by 25,000 people. We also hosted RAGBRAI, which brought a huge crowd to our community. There are many volunteers who help out with Puckerbrush Days, our City’s annual celebration, in addition to the area festivals and celebrations. In addition, Forest City has hosted the State Fire Convention in 1997 & 2007, and we will be hosting again in 2017. None of these events could happen without the time and talents of these dedicated volunteers.
Forest City offers an excellent education with the Forest City Community Schools and Waldorf University. Our school system is very progressive and offer laptop computers to their students for their school work. The school has their own wind generator and heat pump system.
There are excellent resources in our progressive Economic Development, Grow Forest City, and Chamber of Commerce. If you’re thinking about bringing a new industry to Forest City, our Industrial Park offers paved concrete streets and available space. If you’re interested in a downtown venture, our downtown continues to grow with several newly revamped buildings to house your dreams.
In closing, we welcome you to Forest City. We’re glad you’re here!
Byron Ruiter, Mayor
